Coffee berry extract is derived from the berry like fruit of the Coffee Arabica plant. Traditionally, the fleshy portion was discarded during the harvesting of coffee beans. However, with recent research demonstrating the berry's high antioxidant content, the fruit is now often cultivated for its extract. It is typically added to natural body care products as a complementary ingredient that targets mature or prematurely aged skin.
The potent, yet little known extract is rich in the antioxidant polyphenol, which boasts several skin care benefits. The naturally occurring chemical protects against free radical damage that occurs during and after extensive sun exposure. The amount found in the berry far surpasses that of green tea, blueberry and pomegranate. The fruit also contains other worthwhile compounds including phenolic acid, chlorogenic acid, proanthocyanidina and ferulic acid. The antioxidant works by oxidizing free radicals which have the potential to destroy collagen bonds leading to the formation of wrinkles.
The extract is typically added to naturally based formulations to increase the efficacy of these products. Topical application of the extract leads to skin that is less prone to wrinkling and sagging. Additionally, it has the potential to reduce acne outbreaks and relieve the symptoms associated with contact dermatitis and eczema. Like most other plant based compounds it is safe to use regularly without the likelihood of producing unwanted side effects.
Several natural bath and body products currently include coffee berry extract in their list of active ingredients. Its increasing popularity is the result of its overwhelming benefits that include antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
