Hawaii's best beaches

Lanakai means' heavenly sea' and to the local Polynesian native that is just what this beach is...heavenly. The locals consider Lanakai to be the "best swimming beach" in Hawaii. The beach is picturesque with its mile long stretch of white sands, beautiful blue waters and its secluded offshore reefs. This beach is a sunbather's dream. Just remember to apply lots of SPF 30 sun tanning lotion and don't stay in the sun too long. Apart from swimming and sunbathing, Lanakai is famous for kayaking, canoeing, wind-surfing and sailing. It is perfect for photo-shoots and is a vacationer's paradise island. The natives also help to make the Lanakai experience fun and special with their eagerness and hospitable island charm.

Hanalei beach
Hanalei beach is situated on the northern shores of Kauai and is absolutely magical. Hanalei is also the largest bay on Kauai island and features a host of beautiful waterfalls, as well as a beautiful semicircle of white sandy beach. Hanalei is surrounded by natural beauty and is bordered by two rivers on its eastern and western shores. Hanalei offers boat rides, kayaking, surfing, wind surfing, fishing and of course, swimming. There are, however,' no dogs' and ' no jumping off the pier' signs that are reportedly ignored but that tourists should be mindful of, just as a precaution. Hanalei represents one of the many jewels to be found on the beautiful Kauai islands. This beach is great, especially for serious surfing and water sports fanatics.

Kaanapali beach
Kaanapali could also be called the beach with many names. It is also referred to as ' Keka's beach', 'Canoe beach', 'Dig me beach' and ' Black Rock beach'. The last name is the most applicable as there is a huge lava rock formation dividing the beach on the western end of Maui's shores. This beach features two big resorts so amenities such as shopping, restaurants, sailing and boating are virtually guaranteed. Other popular water sports activities include diving, snorkeling, kayaking, fishing and scuba diving. Black Rock beach offers a secluded type of atmosphere that is great for a honeymooning couple but with all the amenities of those high-end resorts and at reasonable prices. As a result of the two resorts, this beach is very popular and tends to be crowded.

Hanauma bay
Hanauma Bay on Oahu was formed many, many years ago when a volcanic crater was flooded by the elements. Since then, it has become a popular spot. Known for the diversity of its fisheries industry, as well as for its beauty, Hanauma Bay was designated a marine life conservation site in 1967. This was because water sporting activities were threatening the marine life. As a consequence, visitors to this beach must plan wisely and get there early to enjoy this beautiful attraction as there are visitor limits on this beach. Hanauma Bay can still be enjoyed for its breathtaking sparkling waters, just respect the marine life and book early.

Ke'e beach park and Poipu beach
Ke'e beach park and Poipu beach on Kauai are two of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Ke'e's secluded lagoon offers an awesome coral reef and is a very popular site for snorkeling. If you are excited about marine life, Ke'e offers a variety of tropical fish and turtles. Poipu beach is considered the most popular beach on Kauai's southern shores. Ideal for families, Poipu has a cove-like boulder that creates a wonderful atmosphere for family snorkeling adventures. The weather conditions are great all year round and it is a favorite site for body-boarders and surfers. Come to Poipu beach and sunbathe with the Monk seals, an endangered species of seals that are native to this island and can be observed sunbathing along Poipu's shores.

Kapalua beach
Kapalua beach, on Maui, is the most laid back of all the beaches. Suitable for the more introverted traveler who just wants a quiet swim on a beautiful beach, Kapalua sits right in between two lava points and is well-known for its calming surfs and gentle breezes. This beach is ideal for families with toddlers who do not care for the more adventurous water sports.

Papohaku beach
Papohaku beach on Molokai Island features miles and miles of white sand beaches and is as close as any human can get to a deserted island. Swim with the crabs as you enjoy the call of the gulls in virtual solitude. Great for surfing, body-boarding and other water sports, Papohaku is a great site for a romantic getaway.

The Hawaiian Islands offer great, pristine beaches to suit the varied desires of even the fussiest vacationer. Many reasonably priced amenities and beautiful, picturesque scenery are just a few of the reasons to visit any one of Hawaii's most beautiful beaches. So don a T-shirt and shorts and head to the beach.
